Popsicals is a dance school located in Woking, New Zealand, offering a unique and fun approach to performing arts education. Unlike traditional schools, Popsicals focuses on the pure enjoyment of singing, dancing, and acting, without the pressure of exams, competitions, or seriousness. It is a place where pop music meets musicals, creating a vibrant and engaging environment for children between the ages of 4–16 years.
At Popsicals, the aim is to provide children with well-rounded performing arts training while building their social skills and confidence within a group. The school believes in encouraging children to reach their full potential, but with a focus on the fun side of performance, the passion of music, and the joy of movement, rather than strict technique, grades, or exams. Each child who attends a Popsicals workshop will gain vital skills that can be applied to any career path, such as spatial awareness, voice projection, memory recall, teamwork, and showmanship.
Popsicals prides itself on being an inclusive school, welcoming children of all abilities and backgrounds. All staff members hold an enhanced DBS, are fully insured, and are first aid trained. They are also known for their caring and compassionate approach towards every child.
The school was created and founded by Laura Sharman, a highly experienced professional dancer and vocalist. Laura began her dance journey at the age of 2 and continued her training in various dance styles at renowned schools. She holds qualifications in professional musical theatre and dance instruction. Laura has worked extensively as a solo vocalist and dancer in the UK and Europe, and has gained significant experience teaching musical theatre, commercial and street dance, ballet, tap, and adult group fitness classes.
She has also worked as a special needs learning support assistant and is passionate about inclusivity and ensuring that every child reaches their full potential.
Assisting Laura is a dedicated and enthusiastic team consisting of Jazmine, Millie, Maddie, and Millie. They all have a deep understanding of the values and principles of Popsicals, having been previous pupils themselves. They work together seamlessly to teach and assist at various Popsicals classes, holiday workshops, and parties, ensuring that every child receives the best possible experience.
In addition to weekly classes, Popsicals also offers holiday workshops that are filled with fun-packed days of singing, dancing, acting, and crafts. These workshops are open to boys and girls ages 4–16 years and provide an opportunity for students to learn themed crafts, as well as dances, songs, and drama scenes in preparation for a performance. Popsicals also offers weekly classes at Rowledge Primary School on Saturday mornings, providing even more opportunities for children to engage in the world of performing arts. These classes are designed to teach show-stopping routines while promoting self-expression and creativity.
