Platinum Dance Academy, located in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, is a dance school that stands out for its huge personality and dedication to providing awesome training combined with a fun and supportive environment. Breaking away from the notion of strict and intimidating dance schools, PDA strongly believes that dancers excel when they genuinely enjoy dance and feel safe and relaxed in their surroundings. The studio is a home-away-from-home for many, with alumni frequently returning for training and to reconnect with their dance family.
Offering a diverse range of dance classes, PDA caters to a wide variety of interests and skill levels. Students can explore disciplines such as Street/Commercial Dance, Contemporary Dance, Ballet (RAD syllabus), Aerial Hoop, Aerial Silks, Acro, Cheerleading, Musical Theatre, and Ballroom & Latin. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced dancer, there is something for everyone at Platinum Dance Academy.
Founded in 2010 by Lorna Thompson, PDA initially focused on providing authentic Street Dance training, which was lacking in the area. As classes gained popularity, the school expanded its offerings to include contemporary dance and acro, filling yet another gap in the local dance scene. Since then, PDA dancers have participated in competitions all over the UK and even at world championships, proudly bringing home titles and trophies in teams, solos, and duos. The school has also seized numerous performance opportunities, such as performing at the Silverstone F1 Grand Prix, the O2, and local theatres.
Platinum Dance Academy goes above and beyond by inviting outside professionals, including renowned dancers and choreographers, to lead workshops with their students. These opportunities provide a taste of the “London studio experience” in rural Suffolk. Previous workshop teachers have included respected individuals such as Josh Pilmore, Rhian Duncan, Ainsley Ricketts, Jazmine “Megajam” Meakin, Lukas Mcfarlane, and even Diversity, with whom the academy trained at their studio.
In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, PDA quickly adapted to the circumstances by offering online classes, pre-recorded tutorials, and outdoor classes, ensuring students' progress and well-being remained a priority. Despite the challenges encountered, the academy emerged stronger than ever before, culminating in its relocation to a spacious 10,000 sq ft building in 2021. This new facility, currently being converted into a three-studio premises, allows PDA to offer over 30 classes every week and continue adding new and exciting dance forms to their timetable. The most recent addition is ballroom and Latin dance.
What sets Platinum Dance Academy apart is its incredible atmosphere. Classes are known for being fun, friendly, and creative, making it a truly enjoyable experience for every student. With a warm and welcoming environment, all individuals, regardless of age or ability, are invited to embark on their dance journey with the academy. Owner, head coach, and choreographer Lorna Thompson is committed to maintaining this unique atmosphere, ensuring that Platinum Dance Academy remains an exceptional destination for dance training in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
