Guy invites you to explore the Pipiwharauroa Walking and Biking Trail in Makomako, New Zealand. 🚴♂️🥾 This 18-kilometre adventure spans over private farmland and paper roads, offering a diverse and exhilarating experience for cyclists and walkers.
You’ll experience steep and rolling terrains, making it a thrilling yet rewarding journey. It takes about four hours to walk and two hours to bike through the trail. At 430 metres above sea level, the trail winds over the Te Uku Wind Farm, giving you breathtaking panoramic views of the Waikato region. On clear days, you can see Raglan, Kawhia, Aotea harbours, and even Mt Taranaki. 🌟
The trail starts at the old Kawhia Road end. If you’re coming from Raglan, head towards Hamilton on SH 23, or if you’re from Hamilton, turn left past Te Uku onto Te Mata Road. Follow the signs towards the Wairenga Bridal Veil Falls and continue past Te Mata village to find the signposted trail access near a quarry.
Remember, Makomako’s weather can be unpredictable, so pack the right gear and dress appropriately. Some sections of the trail close for lambing in August, September, and October. Please respect these closures for the safety of the animals. 🐑
The trail holds great historical and cultural significance to the local iwi, Ngaati Maahanga. At its summit is Te Tiho o Tonganui, a historic site honouring significant ancestors. The trail offers a peek into the rich heritage and traditions of the Maaori people.
Thanks to the Waikato District Council, Meridian Energy, and the generous Vanhoutte and Jowsey families, who allowed the trail on their land, the Pipiwharauroa Trail became a reality. It officially opened on August 27, 2011, and has since been a popular spot for both locals and tourists.
So, whether you’re a keen cyclist or just love the outdoors, the Pipiwharauroa Trail promises an unforgettable experience. Grab your bike, lace up your hiking boots, and join Guy in discovering the beauty of Makomako. 🌿🏞️
