The Piarere Water Ski Club, located at the southern end of Lake Karapiro in Waikato's Horahora Domain, has been a beloved part of the lake for over 66 years. Established in 1957 by a group of enthusiastic sportsmen and women, the club has grown its membership base to include not only professional skiers but also families and individuals interested in all types of water sports.
The club boasts excellent facilities, including well-equipped club rooms with a full kitchen, covered gas BBQs, and a dining area for families to refuel after a day on the water. For those looking to relax after a hot shower, there is also a comfortable lounge area. Additionally, the club has recently refurbished its boat ramps and provides ample parking for trailers.
In terms of equipment, the Piarere Water Ski Club offers a wide range of options for members to use, including combo skis, children's ski equipment, wakeboards, and more. The club takes pride in its water-skiing jump, widely recognised as the best in New Zealand, with numerous national records broken using it. In 2012, the jump underwent a full refurbishment, and today, accuracy in jump records is ensured through the installation of Splash Eye.
The club also emphasises the social aspect of membership, with a dedicated social committee that organises regular on and off-water events. These events provide members with opportunities to stay connected and enjoy their time together.
For those interested in coaching, the club offers club coaching nights during the warmer months, covering disciplines such as slalom, jump, wakeboarding, and general boat skills. Additionally, the club has two slalom courses, one conveniently located in front of the club rooms and the other behind a small island, providing excellent wind shelter.
Barefoot water-skiing is another popular activity within the club. With members ranging from complete beginners to national champions, the Piarere site serves as the home base for the Waikato Region of the New Zealand Barefoot Water Ski Club. The club provides all the necessary equipment and expertise for those interested in giving barefooting a try. There is even a dedicated barefoot training and jump course on the lake, near the club.
Membership fees at the Piarere Water Ski Club are comparably low, ensuring accessibility to all who are interested in joining. There is a one-off joining fee, with different rates for family, adult, single, individual junior (21 and under), and associate (magazine-only) memberships. It is encouraged for those living away from home or with their own income to join as adult single members. Guests are welcome, and regular visitors may consider becoming members after three free visits.
Overall, the Piarere Water Ski Club is a vibrant and inclusive community of water sports enthusiasts in Horahora. Whether you're a seasoned professional or a beginner looking to try a new sport, the club offers top-notch facilities, equipment, coaching, and an active social scene.
