The Peter Morton Academy of Ju-Jitsu Karate Judo, also known as PMAJJK, was established by Soke Peter Morton in 1962 in Queanbeyan, New South Wales. It started as a non-profit organisation and has since expanded to various branches across Australia, including the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia.
The academy specialises in teaching a practical, non-competitive self-defence style of martial arts to individuals of all ages, with a strong emphasis on defence techniques. The techniques taught at PMAJJK utilise an attacker's strength to the defender's advantage. The ultimate goal is to initially evade, disable, and immobilise an attacker. The academy prides itself on using technique over strength, resulting in a significant number of female members.
It welcomes both children and adults who are interested in learning practical self-defence skills, rather than those seeking competitive martial arts.
The core syllabus of the academy is based on the techniques and teachings of Soke Shuho Sugita, the first Principal and Master of the Jishukan Ryu. It incorporates elements from Kodokan Judo, Jujitsu, and Kempo Karate. Additionally, the senior syllabus includes boxing and Australian Jujitsu, which are influenced by Soke Morton's background prior to joining the Jishukan Ryu.
Classes at PMAJJK are conducted in a semiformal environment, allowing students to learn how to react instinctively without hesitation. Through regular training, students develop improved coordination, reflexes, physical fitness, self-control, and self-esteem. They also learn how to effectively manoeuvre any situation by utilising leverage, balance, and momentum.
One of the distinguishing aspects of the academy is the family-like atmosphere it cultivates. Soke Morton established the academy not only to teach martial arts and fitness but also to provide support and opportunities to the less fortunate. This mindset has shaped the academy's culture and set it apart from other martial arts schools, which often prioritise strict regimented training methods.
The mission of the academy is to promote principles of loyalty, humility, and respect among its members. Through martial arts training and the academy's motto, it aims to foster personal growth, self-discipline, self-esteem, self-confidence, and overall well-being of the mind, body, and spirit. The academy encourages its members to remain committed to the art by continuously striving for self-improvement and cultivating awareness.
PMAJJK is associated with the International Association of Martial Arts, and its branches can be found in various locations nationwide. These branches include Charnwood, Erindale, Evatt, Hughes, Gilmore, Giralang, Palmerston, and Queanbeyan in the Australian Capital Territory, as well as Shoalhaven in New South Wales. In Queensland, the branches are located in Brisbane, Kingaroy, Mt. Isa, and Sunshine Coast.
Walkerville in South Australia also has a PMAJJK branch.
For further information, the academy provides resources such as publications, articles, newsletters, rules and standards, glossary terms, events and gradings, awards, and items for sale. The academy also offers an instructor login for its certified instructors.
