Perth West Coast Swing Academy, located in Subiaco, is a renowned dance school and learning centre dedicated to the art of West Coast Swing. With a team of passionate and experienced instructors, the academy offers top-notch classes, services, and events for dancers of all levels.

Founded in 1998 by Juan Rando, one of the pioneers of West Coast Swing in Australia, the academy has become a hub for dance enthusiasts seeking to explore this modern swing style. Juan, still actively involved in the dance community, regularly attends national and international events and competitions, ensuring that he brings the latest techniques and knowledge from around the world to Perth.

The academy offers two programmes for West Coast Swing classes on Wednesdays. The Regular Social Programme, known as Play Time, is perfect for absolute beginners who are new to West Coast Swing. Level 1 introduces the basics, such as push breaks, left side passes, and underarm passes, giving students a solid foundation. Once students are confident in their social dancing abilities, they progress to Level 2, where they delve deeper into the complexities of the dance.

Level 3 is an open level that encourages dancers to explore and innovate.

West Coast Swing, also referred to as Modern Swing, is a partner dance characterised by its distinctive elastic look. Dancers use the extension-compression technique in partner connexion, creating beautiful movements within a designated slot on the dance floor. Known for its improvisational nature, West Coast Swing originated from the Savoy Style Lindy, a dance popular in New York in the 1930s. Dean Collins, a dancer from the Savoy Ballroom, brought his own version of the dance to California, captivating local dancers with its unique style.
