Perth Aikido is a sports club located in Perth, Western Australia. The club has been offering traditional Aikido training since February 2005 and is dedicated to the study and practise of Iwama Ryu Aikido, which was taught by the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba Sensei, and passed on by his student Morihiro Saito Sensei.
The head instructor at Perth Aikido is Peter Sceney, and the club offers a range of training classes for both adults and children. Classes include the study of empty-handed defensive locking and throwing techniques, as well as the use of traditional Japanese weapons such as the Aiki-jo (staff) and Aiki-ken (sword).
Perth Aikido regularly holds training sessions at the Loftus Recreation Centre, as well as weekend bukiwaza classes in the park. The club also organises early morning training sessions in Shenton Park next to Lake JualBup. It is worth noting that due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the club adheres to hand sanitization and social distancing principles to limit the spread of the virus.
Beginners are welcome at Perth Aikido and can attend any Friday night or Sunday class. The club offers two free classes for new students and provides uniforms for borrowing during the classes. To continue training after the trial period, beginners need to fill out a membership form and pay the annual membership fee and training fees.
Membership at Perth Aikido costs $100 per year, with a reduced fee of $50 for those joining after June 30th. Additionally, there is a training fee of $100 per calendar month for adults and $60 per calendar month for children.
Perth Aikido is conveniently located just 3 km from the Perth CBD and a 10-minute walk from Leederville train station. The club welcomes visitors and encourages anyone interested in Aikido to get in touch.
