Penguin Walkers

Penguin Walkers is a sports club located in the Central Coast Council area of Australia, dedicated to promoting physical activity and community connexions through walking. As a walking group, they aim to improve the health and well-being of their members while contributing to the prevention of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Members of Penguin Walkers are encouraged to join a walking group within a 10 km, 20 km, 25 km, 50 km, or 100 km radius of their location. By participating in these groups, individuals can build connexions with like-minded people in their community and take steps towards a healthier heart together.

The club emphasises the many benefits of walking regularly. By walking for an average of 30 minutes a day, individuals can reduce their risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes by 30 to 40 percent. Additionally, walking has been proven to manage weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol, reduce the risk of developing certain cancers, maintain bone density, improve balance and coordination, and reduce the risk of falls and injuries.

Healthcare professionals are encouraged to refer their patients to Penguin Walkers' structured and supportive walking programme. This programme complements the care provided by healthcare professionals and helps patients meet the national physical activity guidelines. Whether individuals want to walk alone or in a group, the motivational programme is designed to support and encourage them on their fitness journey.

The club also highlights inspirational stories from its members, such as Maria, who successfully managed her weight, diabetes, and blood pressure issues through walking. These personal stories serve as a motivation to others and highlight the positive impact walking can have on mental and physical health.

Getting started is easy, as individuals can search for a walking group near their location and register with the Walk Organiser who will provide all the necessary information to start walking.

For those passionate about promoting walking and supporting their community, Penguin Walkers encourages individuals to become Volunteer Walk Organisers. These individuals take on the responsibility of organising and leading walking groups, planning routes, and welcoming new members. As a Volunteer Walk Organiser, training, and support are provided, along with recognition and rewards for their contribution to the club.

Penguin Walkers welcomes individuals over the age of 18 who are friendly, enthusiastic, and welcoming to join their community.
