Outrigger canoe paddling is an ancient form of transport with its origins dating back more than 30,000 years in the Pacific Rim. The sport played a crucial role in the development and expansion of island cultures. In Australia, outrigging is a relatively young sport, with the first club being formed on the Gold Coast in 1978. However, it has quickly gained popularity and now boasts 88 registered clubs across the country.
At Panamuna Outrigger Canoe Club, we not only focus on the competitive aspect of the sport but also prioritise making paddling a fun experience for our members. We maintain a relaxed and easygoing atmosphere, both during training sessions and outside the canoe. Alongside getting fit and improving your paddling skills, you're sure to make lifelong friends.
Our club offers world-class training facilities and caters to paddlers of all abilities. Please note that participants should be competent swimmers and have a reasonable level of fitness, as with any water activity. We have regular training sessions on the Sunshine Coast, at Outrigger Park in Minyama. The current training schedule includes sessions on Tuesday afternoons, Thursday afternoons, and Saturday mornings.
However, please check with the Secretary to confirm the days and timings, as they are subject to change.
Panamuna Outrigger Canoe Club is proud of its members and their achievements. We competed in the 2016 World Va'a Sprints held at Lake Kawana and achieved fantastic results. Our club welcomes new members, whether they wish to join us socially or competitively. We have age categories ranging from juniors, starting at 8 years old, to members over 70 who participate in our Platinum category.
Additionally, we are involved in the national adaptive paddling programme, providing opportunities for people with physical disabilities to partake in this amazing sport. The outrigger season begins in November. Membership includes both a registration and insurance component.
