Melbourne and 93 km South-East of Mildura. Ouyen is known for its strong sense of community and the beautiful natural landscapes that surround the town. One of the main attractions in Ouyen is the newly opened Ouyen Lake, a recreational lake that provides a range of activities for locals and visitors to enjoy.
The idea of establishing a recreational lake in the Mallee region has been in the works since 1998. The initial planning process for the pipeline water system overlooked the need for recreational and environmental water. However, after years of hard work by a dedicated group of individuals, the project has finally become a reality. The Ouyen Lake is now open to the public, although there are still ongoing projects to be completed.
The Lake Project has received strong support from various organisations, including the Mallee Catchment Management Authority, Mildura Rural City Council, and the Department of Environment and Primary Industries. Members of parliament and mining organisations have also shown interest in the project. Over 300 people attended a community meeting in 2013 to show their support for the lake.
The chosen site for the lake is the Old Ouyen Reservoir Site, located northwest of Ouyen. The site offers a picturesque setting surrounded by natural beauty. The lake has been carefully designed, with surveys and 3D maps created to ensure the perfect size, shape, and depth. The result is a stunning swimming lake that is both safe and enjoyable for visitors of all ages.
As the Ouyen Lake is still a work in progress, there are strict rules in place to ensure the safety of everyone. Overnight camping is currently not allowed, but visitors are encouraged to keep an eye on the Lake Project Facebook page for updates and more detailed information.
Funding for the Ouyen Lake Project has been a community effort, with generous donations from various organisations. However, more funding is still needed to complete the remaining projects. If you would like to contribute to this worthy community project, please get in touch with Deane Munro, the contact person for donations.
Overall, Ouyen Lake serves as a testament to the hard work and dedication of the community to create a recreational space for everyone to enjoy. Whether you're a local or a visitor passing through, a visit to Ouyen Lake is sure to provide a refreshing and enjoyable experience amidst the beautiful surroundings of the Mallee region.
