Ostrich Chess Club, a key part of Slough Chess Academy, is dedicated to helping children in the Slough community polish their chess skills. The club focuses on bringing kids to a competitive standard, equipping them to join chess tournaments and make the most of online resources.
Founded by Mat Uramovski, a seasoned chess expert with a 2100 ECF rating and three decades of tournament experience, the club offers top-tier instruction. Mat is actively involved in the chess scene, participating in the 4NCL for the Fermented Sharks, Hounslow Chess Club, Slough Chess Club, and Middlesex County League. His credentials include degrees in Art History and Film Production, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Online Education. Mat has been teaching chess for over ten years and currently runs school clubs at several local primary academies.
Recognising the developmental benefits of chess for primary school children, Ostrich Chess Club aims to provide a platform for young players to learn and excel. The club offers online classes via Google Meet and a virtual chess interface, making it convenient for kids to learn from home. Beginners can join group lessons, while advanced players have the option for one-to-one sessions to fine-tune their skills.
Ostrich Chess Club also provides home tutoring services. Kids in Years 1-3 can form their own groups, join an existing one, or receive individual lessons. The club serves areas including Slough, Langley, Staines, Egham, Windsor, and Maidenhead.
The club convenes at the Ostrich Inn in Colnbrook every Sunday from 10am to 12pm. This offers children the opportunity to learn and play chess in a historic setting while socialising with peers. Under Mat Uramovski's expert guidance, the club prepares youngsters for both national and international competitions, with sessions aligned to the school term.
