Hi Everyone,
Charlie, the organiser of Orwell Yacht Club (OYC), wanted to share a few highlights about the club with the sports community. OYC is a buzzing spot on the outskirts of Ipswich, UK, not New Zealand (that was a cheeky mix-up!). Founded back in 1918, the club now boasts around five hundred members, and it’s a cracking place for sailors of all levels. Nestled in Ostrich Creek, which it shares with Fox’s Marina, it sits right at the head of the lovely River Orwell. Thanks to regular dredging, deep water access to the river from the Clubhouse is sorted, no matter the tide.
One thing that makes OYC shine is its friendly vibe and the solid spirit of self-help running through the place. Most of the club’s top-notch facilities are down to the hard work of its own members. They come together for Saturday morning working parties in spring and autumn. These get-togethers not only keep costs low but are also a top chance to mingle and gear up for the season. The club runs entirely by members, for members, making it affordable and totally worth it.
The Clubhouse itself is quite something – a modern two-storey building featuring a Lounge Bar, Dance Floor, Kitchen, Quiet Lounge, and Meeting Rooms. It’s a welcoming spot for members to chill and join in the many social events Charlie helps organise through the year. A floating pontoon ensures members can hit the water anytime, and there are over 150 moorings, including deep water berths and fore & aft moorings close by. The Basin holds tidal pontoon moorings, moorings between piles and pontoon types, with more available under the Orwell Bridge at Freston.
For dinghy and tender sailors, there’s plenty of storage in racks and trolley parks. OYC also runs a buzzing Junior Section where kids pick up sailing and seamanship basics from RYA-certified instructors and a gang of dedicated helpers. A waiting pontoon is available too, perfect for short-term deep-water berthing.
During winter lay-up, the club can stash around 100 boats ashore, with beach and winter moorings on offer. Personal lockers are there to keep all the sailing gear safe. Boat servicing facilities include a decked “Dolphin” with a light crane for masts and scrubbing for deeper draughts. OYC also boasts a robust cruiser fleet and an active Dinghy Sailing section, with qualified instructors and support boats on hand.
There’s more than just sailing at OYC – the social scene is buzzing! With dances, dinners, music nights, trips, and talks lined up throughout the year, there's always something going on. Plus, secure car parking is sorted even during the big dos. Joining up is straightforward – simply check the website or give the club a call.
Charlie and the rest of the OYC gang reckon it’s a place where sailing enthusiasts can really come together to enjoy their love for the water. With ace facilities, stunning waterways, and an active social calendar, it's a splendid club right here in Ipswich.
Cheers, and see you on the water!
Charlie
