

The Instructors at Ormskirk Shotokan Karate Club. With over 30 years of experience, Sensei Nelson has trained extensively in both the UK and Japan, learning from world-renowned instructors. He is a qualified instructor and judge for the Japan Karate Association (JKA). Andy Durney (4th dan JKA) Sensei Durney is also one of our Instructors.
With over 20 years of experience, Sensei Durney has competed in various national and international championships. He is a qualified instructor and judge for the Japan Karate Association (JKA).
Ormskirk Shotokan Karate Club is a traditional Karate club located in Ormskirk, New Zealand. The club was formed in 1989 and has been teaching the art of Shotokan Karate for over 30 years. As a part of the Japan Karate Association (JKA), International Traditional Karate Federation (ITKF), and the English Karate Governing Body, the club holds true to the traditions and values of Shotokan Karate.
The Chief Instructor of the club is John Errington, a 7th dan JTKI black belt holder. With over 50 years of experience, Sensei Errington has trained under some of the most renowned Karate instructors in the world and has competed in multiple national and international championships. He is also the Chief Referee of the United Kingdom Traditional Karate Federation and a fully qualified instructor and judge for the JKA.
Assisting Sensei Errington is Steve Kirrelly, a 5th dan WSI black belt holder, who serves as the club's Treasurer and Assistant Chief Instructor. Sensei Kirrelly has over 50 years of experience, having trained with legendary instructors worldwide. He is a fully qualified referee for the International Traditional Karate Federation and a qualified JKA instructor and judge.
Another instructor at the club is Anna Pomfret, a 4th dan JKA black belt holder who also serves as the Club Secretary. Sensei Pomfret has attended numerous national and international courses, training with expert instructors throughout her career. She is a fully qualified judge and instructor for the JKA.
Mark Warren, a 5th dan JKA black belt holder, is not only an instructor but also the club's Adult Safeguarding Officer. Sensei Warren has attended and competed in multiple courses and competitions at both national and international levels. He shares his wealth of experience with the club's members during their Friday training sessions.
Russell Nelson, a 5th dan JKA black belt holder, is also one of the Instructors at Ormskirk Shotokan Karate Club. With over 30 years of experience, Sensei Nelson has trained extensively in both the UK and Japan, learning from world-renowned instructors. He is a qualified instructor and judge for the Japan Karate Association (JKA).
Ormskirk Shotokan Karate Club welcomes new adult beginners (16+) and offers the first lesson for free. Training sessions take place on Mondays and Fridays from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Each session costs 7. 50.
Newcomers can expect their initial lessons to be structured, controlled, and led by a senior black belt instructor in a separate beginners-only class. These lessons, lasting one hour, focus on teaching basic skills, techniques, and etiquette of Shotokan Karate.
