Jiu Jitsu is an ancient martial art that originated in 8th century Japan. Oni Jiu Jitsu, rooted in these ancient combat styles, has been adapted by Sensei Daryl to include new techniques and approaches suitable for modern situations. The art emphasises control and restraint techniques, combatitive throws, joint manipulations, stand-up grappling, full contact sparring, hold-downs/submissions, weapon defence techniques, and ground grappling. The club also offers training camps, seminars, workshops, and workplace self-defence/team-building skills.
Oni Jiu Jitsu holds values such as comradery, compassion, discipline, personal growth, family, education, and humility. All training and practise take place in a safe and supportive environment, ensuring the development of skills while promoting confidence and a sense of community.
The head instructor, Sensei Daryl, has over 20 years of experience in Jiu Jitsu. He started his career with Sakura Kan Jiu Jitsu and was graded to Shodan (1st Dan) in 2012. After becoming the head of Sakura Kan Jiu Jitsu in New Plymouth, Sensei Daryl took a risk in 2020 and opened his own branch called Oni Jiu Jitsu. He has since developed a detailed syllabus layout and gained coaching qualifications, including being graded to 4th Dan by the New Zealand Jiu Jitsu Federation in 2022.
Sensei Daryl also holds coaching qualifications from the New Zealand Jiu Jitsu Federation, Max International College, Sport NZ, and NZQA Skills Active. He is committed to providing high-quality training and support to his students, focusing on their physical and personal development.
