Nidan (2nd Dan) Black Belt Special interest in self-defence techniques. I started my martial arts journey in my late 30s, looking for a way to stay fit and learn self-defence. I instantly fell in love with Goju-Ryu Karate and the discipline it brought to my life. It has taught me self-confidence and mental strength, and I am passionate about sharing these benefits with others.
In addition to karate, I enjoy hiking, reading, and spending time with my family.
At Orange Goju-Ryu Karate Dojo, we strive to create a positive and welcoming atmosphere for all our students. We believe that martial arts is not just about physical training, but also about personal growth and character development. Our classes cater to individuals of all fitness levels, ages, sizes, and physical limitations. Our classes are designed to develop both the mind and body. We start with warm-ups and stretches to prepare the body for training. Fitness and strength-related exercises are incorporated to enhance overall physical conditioning. Students learn the basics of movement, stances, blocks, punches, and kicks.
As they progress, they will learn kata (set moves) with applications (bunkai) and develop kumite (sparring) skills and self-defence moves. We also conduct grading classes periodically, giving students the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and progress to the next belt level.
Sensei Geoff Tait, a 5th Dan Black Belt, leads our dojo. With over 20 years of experience in various martial arts styles, including judo, Seido karate, and Goju-Ryu, Sensei Geoff brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his teaching. He has trained and graded under renowned instructors in New Zealand and Japan, including Terauchi Sensei and Higaonna Sensei. Sensei Geoff's goal is to pass on the values and teachings that have been passed down to him, ensuring the preservation and growth of Goju-Ryu Karate.
We are privileged to have a team of dedicated assistant instructors, including Sensei Colin Dibble, a 3rd Dan Black Belt, who specialises in kata, and Sempai Sharon, a 2nd Dan Black Belt, with a special interest in self-defence techniques. They bring their unique experiences and passion for karate to their teaching, creating a well-rounded and comprehensive learning environment.
We are officially affiliated with the Traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate Federation, allowing us to benefit from the knowledge and expertise of international masters. Our affiliation ensures that our karate continues to grow and improve, and that our students receive the highest quality instruction.
