Ohau-Ski-Fields, the local skiing club in Lake Ōhau, is thrilled to announce the upcoming Ohau Historic event. This event is not just your ordinary skiing competition – it is a celebration of the fascinating history of Lake Ōhau and its surroundings.
Let us take you on a journey back in time to 1950 when Harry Wigley, the visionary behind this event, proposed the idea of a low-cost tourist lodge at Glen Lyon Station. Despite facing objections from local run holders, Wigley's determination led him to acquire 10 hectares of land at Lake Ōhau. And just like that, Lake Ohau Lodge was opened in 1951, featuring thirty bedrooms, a dining room, and a lounge with a stunning local stone fireplace that still captivates visitors to this day.
The lodge quickly became a hub for all sorts of activities. Visitors could indulge in riding, fishing, tramping, and even take excursions on the beautiful lake. But it didn't stop there – in winter, guests were treated to the exhilarating experience of ice skating at Huxley Gorge.
The Wigleys, always looking to expand their offerings, set their sights on the snow basin on Mt Sutton. With their dedication and hard work, they transformed it into a wonderful ski field. Serious skiers and families alike flocked to this picturesque destination. In 1953, a rope tow was even installed to make skiing more accessible to everyone.
As the years went by, the ski field and the lodge became synonymous with warm hospitality and awe-inspiring scenery. The Eames family took over the lodge in 1959, continuing the tradition of providing top-notch service to all visitors. Their hospitality became legendary, attracting more and more people to the lodge and the ski field. In 1978, to the delight of skiing enthusiasts, a T-bar was installed, greatly enhancing the vertical length of the ski run.
And now, here we are, ready to celebrate this remarkable history with the Ohau Historic event. Join us for a day filled with thrilling skiing action, reminiscent of the early days when Wigley's dream began. The event promises not only exciting competitions but also a chance to immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of Lake Ōhau's past.
So mark your calendars and spread the word about Ohau Historic. It's not just a skiing event; it's a celebration of history, adventure, and the enduring spirit of Ohau-Ski-Fields. We can't wait to see you there!
