Ocean Beach Kiwi Surf Life Saving Club

Ocean Beach Kiwi Surf Life Saving Club, led by your mate Steve, has been keeping Ocean Beach safe since 1965. Just a short drive from Napier and Hastings, it's a popular spot in Hawke's Bay, especially in summer.

From November to March, Steve and the team have got your back with weekend patrols. Saturdays, they're on from 12:00pm to 5:30pm, and Sundays from 10:30am to 4:30pm. With Ocean Beach known for its surf, these patrols are super important to keep everyone safe.

Safety is huge for Steve’s team. They're all about making sure you know how to stay safe in and around the water. Besides patrolling over 80 busy beaches, they educate folks about water dangers—whether you’re beaching, fishing, boating, or just soaking up the sun.

When you’re at the beach, swim between the red and yellow flags—these mark the safest spots, set by the Surf Lifeguards. The flags might move with changing conditions, so keep an eye on them.

Don’t forget about sun safety! New Zealand has a high melanoma death rate, so slap on that sunscreen, reapply every hour or after a swim, and go for a higher SPF if you can.

And watch out around rocks if you're fishing or exploring—Steve’s team wants you to be cautious and stay safe.
