Are received for day trips to experience sailing without the commitment of a full course, so these are also available during the summer break. In September, RYA Training Courses resume and run until November. The school offers a range of courses, including RYA Practical, Other Practical, Theory, and One Day & Specialist courses, catering to sailors of all levels and interests.
The Principal of Northumbria Sailing, Melvyn Wallhead, is an Ocean Yachtmaster with over 40 years of experience with sailing boats. Melvyn is passionate about sharing his knowledge and love for sailing with others, so they too can experience the joy of sailing a yacht on a warm day with a favourable breeze. He believes that the North East and Northumberland area is an underestimated sailing area and takes pride in highlighting the region's fine coastline, islands, castles, and superb bird life. Even if the weather is not ideal, there are still opportunities for enjoyable sailing in the River Tyne.
John Parlane, the Chief Instructor, is an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor & Examiner. He developed his love for sailing in Morecambe Bay, starting with sailing dinghies and later venturing on a cruising yacht across the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man. With a wealth of experience and instructor qualifications, John is passionate about helping others develop their sailing skills and confidence.
The school operates out of Royal Quays, North Shields, which provides excellent facilities, including smart ensuite facilities and 24-hour accessibility. The school boat, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 419 Pure Gallus, built in late 2016, is used for training courses and other sailing activities. The marina's lock allows for convenient access to the water at any time, day, or night.
Northumbria Sailing offers a variety of courses throughout the year, ensuring that there are options available for sailors at different times. The school focuses not only on safety at sea but also on learning to enjoy the challenge that sailing brings. While learning and improving sailing skills is a priority, having fun is also an integral part of the experience. After a day at sea, participants can look forward to the delight of enjoying a drink in a new port's bar, savouring the joy of exploring new destinations.
