North River Horse & Humanship Centre is a renowned equestrian facility and horse riding school located in Waipu, Northland, New Zealand. Set amidst the picturesque natural rural landscape, the centre offers a unique environment for learning and teaching. The mission of North River Horse & Humanship Centre is to bring people and horses together to foster a deep understanding and connexion, promoting personal growth and equestrian excellence.
Owned and operated by Ian and Anke Benson, the centre has been developed over the years with contributions from a diverse range of individuals. Clients, staff, working students, and contractors from various backgrounds and countries have all played a part in creating the special atmosphere and programmes offered at North River.
The heart of the centre is its herd of 25 horses and ponies, each with their own unique story and background. Many of the horses have come to North River as “problem horses” with challenging pasts. However, under the care and guidance of the dedicated team, they have found their forever homes and now serve as incredible teachers and guides. The horses are all kept together as one herd, except the stallion who runs with a mare.
They live outdoors year-round, being barefoot and only covered when necessary. Regular rotations of paddocks and the opportunity to explore the bush and play wild horses contribute to their well-being and overall health.
The programmes offered at North River Horse & Humanship Centre cater to individuals of all skill levels and interests. From beginners to advanced riders, there are learning experiences designed to suit everyone. The centre also offers specialised workshops and retreats, such as the Humanship Workshop and the Wairua Kai Women's Retreat, providing unique opportunities for personal growth and development.
In addition to its educational programmes, North River Horse & Humanship Centre offers a trainee programme for individuals interested in pursuing a career in the equestrian industry. The centre also welcomes overseas visitors, providing them with a memorable equestrian experience in the beautiful surroundings of New Zealand.
For those looking to stay at the centre, there are options available to accommodate guests. The centre regularly organises events and open days, allowing visitors to connect with the horses and learn more about the services provided.
North River Horse & Humanship Centre is dedicated to promoting a harmonious partnership between humans and horses. The centre's commitment to natural horsemanship and the well-being of its horses sets it apart as a leader in the equestrian community. Whether you are a seasoned rider or a horse enthusiast looking to learn more, North River provides a nurturing and educational environment that will enhance your horsemanship skills and deepen your connexion with horses.
