Northlakes Physical Culture Club, located in Cameron Park, is a dance school that prides itself on being built on the values of family, friendship, and fun. This club is dedicated to fostering strong and confident girls and women who are empowered to grow together. At Northlakes Physie, everyone is accepted for who they are and supported to be the best they can be.
Physie, short for Bjelke-Petersen Physical Culture, has been in Australia since 1892 and is a unique and inspiring dance sport for girls and women of all ages. It combines elements of ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, and aerobics to increase poise, strength, fitness, flexibility, and confidence. The choreography changes annually to teach the relationship between movement and music, rhythm, coordination, balance, and musical interpretation. The Physie year culminates in friendly competitions for teams and individuals, although participation in competitions is not compulsory.
Northlakes Physie offers classes for different age groups. For juniors, aged 4 to 12 years, the BJP Syllabus is taught through positive encouragement and engaging classes. Physie not only teaches young girls the joy of dance but also develops their social skills and builds the foundations for them to become confident individuals. Classes for juniors are held on Monday afternoons during school terms, with the option for competitor members to attend a second weekly class.
For seniors, aged 13 years and above, girls dance in their age category until they reach Champion Girl status, after which their category is determined each year based on their competition performance. Through the BJP syllabus, girls learn to communicate through movement, music, and performance, enabling them to shine on stage. Routines are practised and perfected throughout the year. Senior classes are held for 1 hour twice a week during school terms.
Northlakes Physie is proud of its beautiful, supportive, and inclusive ladies group. Ladies of all ages and abilities are provided with a platform to shine through the combination of jazz, ballet, contemporary, hip hop, and aerobics. The routines are designed to increase strength, fitness, and flexibility, creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels encouraged, supported, and valued. Ladies are offered 1-hour classes twice a week during school terms.
The team at Northlakes Physie is led by Kylie Martin and Karen Morgan, who are passionate about physical culture and dedicated to creating a positive and nurturing environment for their students. They strive to instil good sportsmanship, respect for oneself and others, and teamwork among their students.
