Northern Bowling Club, located in Edinburgh, is a renowned and prestigious lawn bowls club that has been in existence since 1879. The club's rich history and tradition make it a beloved institution among bowlers in the area.
The origins of the club can be traced back to the opening of a Bowling Green and Curling Pond at Henderson Row by Perth Street, which was leased from Heriot's Hospital. The club, initially known as Northern Bowling Club (Limited), was led by Bailie Hay as the first President and Bailie Smith as Vice-President. However, in 1889, the site of the green and pond had to be fenced off for building purposes by the Heriot Trust, prompting the members to seek a new location.
Fortunately, the members secured a portion of Warriston Park from Sheriff Henderson Begg as the club's new grounds. The new green was laid on its current site and officially opened on May 10, 1890. The opening received coverage in various newspapers of the time, highlighting features such as a hedge surrounding the ground, neat little spaces for flower plantings, a handsome pavilion, and a finely constructed rockery with an ornamental bronze eagle.
Throughout the years, Northern Bowling Club has been visited by numerous notable individuals, including figures from municipal politics, business, commerce, and even the entertainment industry. The club proudly possesses the original visitors' book, showcasing signatures of these prominent personalities. Notable signings include Will Fyffe, who labelled himself as the “Champion Bowler,” as well as Tom and Jack of “The Alexander Brothers,” who performed at the club.
In 2004, the club celebrated its 125th anniversary, with some members having been part of the club since its centenary year in 1979. This longevity reflects the deep sense of camaraderie and tradition that has been fostered within the club.
Northern Bowling Club actively participates in various competitions and events, both internally and in association with the Edinburgh Bowling Association. The club also has a seniors division for older bowlers who still possess a passion for the sport. Membership information and the latest club news can be found on the club's social media platforms and club directories.
