The NORTH DEVON ATHLETIC CLUB is a fantastic athletics club located in Braunton that is open to athletes of all abilities and ages, from 8 years old to veterans. The club prides itself on providing inclusive and instructive coaching programs to help athletes reach their full potential. Whether you're just starting out or looking to compete, they have something for everyone.
One of the key features of the NORTH DEVON ATHLETIC CLUB is their team of UKA Qualified coaches who are available to assist with training requirements. These coaches bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to help athletes improve their skills and performance. Training nights take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the Middle Distance/Endurance group, with some event-specific groups training on other evenings from September to April.
Indoor coaching is offered at both Pilton and Braunton Schools, providing athletes with the opportunity to train in a supportive and controlled environment. Additionally, the club offers cross country training for middle/long distance runners, giving them the chance to build endurance and develop their race tactics.
To participate in the training sessions, there is a small training fee of £1.50 per session. This investment guarantees access to quality coaching and the chance to improve as an athlete.
The NORTH DEVON ATHLETIC CLUB is divided into several training groups, each led by experienced coaches. For primary school athletes in Years 3 and 4, there is a junior training group that focuses on introducing basic athletics skills using the England Athletics 365 programme. The emphasis in these sessions is on personal improvement and enjoyment, and regular attendance is encouraged to ensure progress. Athletes in this group also have the opportunity to compete in various leagues and series throughout the year.
Rob Lewis Singletary leads the jumps training group, which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These sessions take place at the track and Braunton School Sports Hall, providing athletes with the perfect environment to improve their jumping skills.
Steve Choules and Chris Norman lead the middle distance development group for athletes in the under 13 and 15 age groups. This group focuses on the development of cross country racing during the winter months and middle distance racing on the track in the summer. Training sessions are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and many Sunday mornings and cover a range of activities including hurdling, long jump, high jump, and throws.
Athletes interested in distances ranging from 400m to 5000m, including steeplechase, will find a home in Mark Brace's senior middle distance group. This group welcomes athletes of all ages who are committed to their training. Sessions are graded by ability and take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and most Sundays at various venues. The program includes a variety of training methods such as endurance, interval sets, hills, threshold training, plyometrics, circuits, and weights. Athletes from other groups are also welcome to join this group.
For athletes aged 13 and above who are interested in shot put, discus, hammer, or javelin, Colin Petty and Simon Bennett lead the throws training group. This group offers specialised coaching to help athletes improve their throwing technique and performance.
