Night Hoops is a basketball club based in Vancouver that aims to provide at-risk youth with a positive and constructive recreational opportunity. Established in 1996, the program offers free late-night basketball programming for teens aged 12-18 on Friday and Saturday nights. The club's mission is to empower youth and communities through an inclusive basketball program that encourages healthy life choices and pro-social behaviour.
Night Hoops aims to connect youth with their community by organizing basketball leagues in various community centres, neighbourhood houses, community schools, and youth custody services. The program is designed to be inclusive, with no gender, skill-level, or economic barriers to participation. It gives youth the opportunity to be part of a team, wear a jersey, and represent their community in a supportive and supervised environment.
The club was originally founded by Gordon Hogg, a Director of a Youth Custody Centre, to reduce recidivism among at-risk youth. Over the years, Night Hoops has served over 4,200 boys and girls, as well as engaged over 240 coaches in the program. The club promotes community and personal development through teamwork, fair play, life skills, and fun.
Night Hoops is led by a dedicated team of executive members, including President Emilio Godoy, Vice President Jade Christie, and Treasurer Brent Tysoe, among others. The club also has a board of directors and members who are committed to supporting the mission and values of Night Hoops.
In addition to basketball leagues, Night Hoops also offers a Winter 3v3 League for youth aged 12-18, with games held at Britannia Community Centre and Sunset Community Centre on Fridays and Saturdays. The club is focused on providing a safe and inclusive space for youth to develop their skills, build relationships, and have fun through the game of basketball.
