New Zealand Jiu Jitsu Academy – Wanganui is a progressive Martial Arts organisation located in Whanganui, New Zealand. The academy specialises in Jiu Jitsu, a modern system of self-defence that originated in Japan from ancient styles used by Samurai warriors on the battlefield.

Jiu Jitsu, often referred to as the 'gentle art' or the 'flexible science', is based on principles that allow individuals, regardless of physique or stature, to efficiently control and release their energy to its full potential. Unlike other martial arts, Jiu Jitsu does not rely on strength, but on skill and technique.

The academy believes in building character through Jiu Jitsu, helping individuals better understand themselves and develop discipline, focus, and self-confidence. Led by Shihan Shanon Casson, the academy has developed an evolved system of self-defence while still honouring the traditions and history of Jiu Jitsu.

The curriculum at New Zealand Jiu Jitsu Academy – Wanganui covers a wide range of techniques and areas of study, including throws (nage waza), ground grappling (ne waza), striking (atemi waza), strangles (shime waza), defensive rolls and breakfalls (ukemi), joint locking (kansetsu waza), pressure points (kyusho jitsu), weapons defence, small joint manipulation, and control & restraint.

The academy prides itself on its lineage and the expertise of its instructors. Grand Master Steve Heremaia, New Zealand's first Jiu Jitsu Grand Master and the highest-ranking Maori Martial Artist, has been instrumental in shaping the academy's curriculum and training methods. Professor Dave Millar, a student of Grand Master Steve Heremaia for over 20 years, has also played a significant role in the development of the academy.

Both Grand Master Steve Heremaia and Professor Dave Millar have been recognised for their contributions to the martial arts community and have been inducted into various Hall of Fame institutions. Their wisdom and guidance have been passed down to the students of New Zealand Jiu Jitsu Academy – Wanganui, ensuring a high standard of instruction and training.
