Newtown Judo Club is a not-for-profit sports club located in the Sydney Metropolitan Area, specifically Newtown and the surrounding suburbs. The club's main objective is to promote the sport of judo and provide its members with valuable physical and mental benefits. Through diligent practise, judo improves fitness, strength, coordination, balance, and dexterity, while also enhancing concentration, self-discipline, and confidence. Additionally, judo provides members with a solid foundation for self-defence.
Conveniently located at Coronation Hall on 95 Lennox St. in Newtown, the club is easily accessible and close to public transport. Newtown Judo Club actively coordinates activities with other relevant sporting and martial arts organisations, fostering social networking and support for its members. The club also places a strong emphasis on member protection and ethical behaviour, having a comprehensive Member Protection Policy and Code of Conduct in place.
The club, its instructors, and members are fully insured, and the instructors hold current Working with Children clearances.
The vision of Newtown Judo Club is to maintain and promote the development of martial arts in a safe and caring environment, focusing on sound judo techniques and historical perspectives. The club aims to encourage participation from individuals of all ages, providing graded classes and individually tailored instruction to meet each member's needs. Moreover, the club strives to enhance the public profile of judo through ethical promotion and a demonstrated respect for both traditional customs and contemporary coaching and training practises. Newtown Judo Club also prioritises building and maintaining connexions with key martial arts organisations in Australia and overseas.
The club's core values include respect, courtesy, and sincerity, promoting diversity, inclusion, and friendship, as well as consideration and positivity. With a strong emphasis on preserving and promoting traditional forms of martial arts, Newtown Judo Club teaches Kodokan judo, the style developed by Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo, at the prestigious Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo. Additionally, the club teaches traditional Japanese ju-jutsu, preserving the cultural and physical origins that shaped judo under Professor Kano. The club provides carefully tailored tuition for both men and women in a safe environment, with the primary objective of offering quality instruction in traditional Japanese martial arts.
The instructors at Newtown Judo Club have been trained by Patricia Harrington, a distinguished 6th Dan Judo practitioner who founded Sosuishi-ryu Australia on July 12th, 1965. Ms. Harrington began studying ju-jutsu under the 15th inheritor of Nippon Sosuishi-ryu, the late Shusaku Shitama, in 1964. She furthered her studies of judo by training under the legendary Kyuzo Mifune (10th Dan) and Keiko Fukuda (10th Dan), making numerous visits to Japan for this purpose.
Ms. Harrington continues to teach at Engadine and regularly provides expert tuition at Newtown Judo Club as well.
