Newtown Breakaways AFL Football Club is an independent women's AFL club located in Marrickville, Sydney. The club participates in the Sydney AFL women's and men's community competition and embraces the values of diversity, engagement with the local community, and a strong sense of identity.
The club welcomes players of all ages and experience levels, emphasising inclusivity and the opportunity for anyone to join the Breakaways family. At Newtown Breakaways, players are committed to the club, their teammates, and the game both on and off the field. The club strives for excellence in football, continuously challenging themselves and each other to improve their skills and football craft.
Newtown Breakaways was established in 2002 when a group of players decided to break away from the Sydney University Bombers and form a new team in the Sydney Women's Australian Football League (now AFL NSW/ACT/Sydney). The club adopted the red and white colours of the Sydney Swans and quickly made their mark in the league, winning four consecutive leadingships between 2002 and 2005. They went on to win their fifth and sixth topships in 2009 and 2010, with a seventh coming in 2015. In 2011, they were awarded the Team of the Decade by the AFL.
The club takes pride in its role in establishing women's AFL in New South Wales and in the unique club personality they have cultivated throughout the years. Many original members of the 2002 team, such as Steph Foster, Rosie Graham, Paula Bartlett, and Chavvauhn Calver, are still actively involved in the club and continue to contribute to its spirit.
The Newtown Breakaways home ground is the HJ Mahoney Reserve in Marrickville, with occasional use of Henson Park for special events. The club also has a merchandise shop available for supporters to show their Breakaways pride.
