New Lodge Riding Centre is a well-established horse riding school located in London. Founded in 1978 by Brian Green, the school initially started as a riding centre for individuals with disabilities. In 1984, they became affiliated with the National Riding for the Disabled (RDA) and have since been providing therapeutic riding facilities to both adults and children in the boroughs of Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich, Lewisham, and Southwark.
With a strong commitment to inclusivity, New Lodge Riding Centre caters to riders with a wide range of special needs, including physical, sensory, and learning difficulties. They currently have 11 RDA ponies/horses that are specially trained to work with individuals with disabilities.
The school operates six days a week and boasts a vibrant community of 75 to 100 regular riders. Their focus is to ensure that each individual has the opportunity to achieve their personal goals and derive direct therapeutic benefits. Riding at New Lodge Centre is not simply about learning to ride a horse; it is about reaching therapeutic goals, combating social isolation, developing life skills, experiencing the outdoors, and connecting with animals.
New Lodge Centre works across the spectrum of disabilities, age groups, and social status, striving to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
1. Developing and supporting opportunities for therapy: The school recognises the therapeutic benefits of horse riding and aims to provide riders with the opportunity to improve their physical and mental well-being through this activity.
2. Developing and supporting opportunities for achievement: New Lodge Riding Centre is committed to helping riders achieve their personal ambitions, whether it be learning to ride independently or participating in horse shows and competitions.
3. Enabling physical activity and enjoyment: The school promotes physical activity and enjoyment through horse riding, allowing individuals to engage in a fun and active lifestyle.
New Lodge Riding Centre also places great emphasis on the welfare of their horses. They prioritise the safety and well-being of their animals and ensure that they are not put at risk in their work with riders.
Over the years, New Lodge Riding Centre has gained increasing support from medical and remedial professions as they recognise the numerous benefits that horse riding brings to people with limited abilities. As a result, the school continues to expand its reach and welcomes individuals with disabilities from beyond their immediate boroughs.
