New To Sprint Orienteering is an activity that combines thinking and racing in urban areas such as campuses and parks. Participants focus on quick decision-making while navigating through the course. The event is suitable for both walking or slow jogging, but becomes more challenging at high speeds due to constant changes of direction and route choice. It takes approximately 15–30 minutes to complete the course, which is in line format and requires finding all the controls in a set order in the fastest possible time. The course lengths vary from 2 km to 3.5 km, allowing participants to choose the best route. The event utilises the Sportident electronic timing system, allowing participants to compare their time to others on the same course.
If this is your first event, you can start by visiting the 'Newcomers' table, where assistance will be provided in deciding a course. Afterward, you can proceed to Registration to pay the entry fee and enter your details into the online system. A timing device called 'Sportident stick' can be borrowed, and instructions on how to use it will be provided at each control. If needed, a compass can also be borrowed. There is no additional charge for borrowing these items, but replacement fees will be required for any lost or damaged items. Once registered, participants can decide their own start time within the advertised timeslots. The map will be pre-marked with the designated course, along with a list of descriptions outlining the features where the controls are located. The Start control can be found at the Start triangle, and punching this control will begin the race. Participants must then navigate to each marked control in order, deciding the best route. After finishing the course and punching the final control, participants can walk to the Finish table to have their time recorded in the event database and return any borrowed gear. Results will be displayed at the event and posted on Eventor, a national Results database. There will be opportunities to engage with other participants, who are always happy to give advice and encouragement. It is recommended to take coming event advertisements to stay updated for future races. Gear for the event can be found by clicking on the provided link. If you don't have a Sportident stick or a compass, you can simply borrow one at Registration. The event offers a variety of environments, from parks and streets to bush and forest, providing an adventure for all participants. Join Today!
