Nenriki Kendo Club, located in Elephant & Castle, London, has been thriving since its establishment in 1966. As the oldest continuous member of the British Kendo Association, the club is proud to be affiliated with the English Sports Council. Throughout the years, Nenriki Dojo has produced a group of skilled Kendo instructors who have gone on to establish their own dojos. Notably, Charles Lidstone, the first president of the British Kendo Association, was once a member of Nenriki, and the late Sir Frank Bowden, a former president of the club, held the prestigious role of elect president of the British Kendo Association.
For those new to Kendo, Nenriki offers an eight-week beginners' course during most terms. The club provides all the necessary equipment for training, except clothing. Participants only need to bring a track-suit or loose-fitting light-weight clothing and a towel. To secure a spot in the course, applications are accepted on a first-come-first-served basis upon receipt of the application form and fees.
Due to the physical nature of Kendo, it is essential for beginners to read and understand the section on risks. If any beginners have specific medical conditions, they must follow the procedure outlined in the British Kendo Association's Significant Medical Issues Policy and submit a signed copy of the notification and authorisation form.
The cost of the Beginners Course is 150, which covers the club membership fees for the duration of the course. Additionally, it includes British Kendo Association Temporary Membership, providing insurance coverage for practise. Participants will receive instruction from experienced and fully qualified coaches, as well as loan of club equipment throughout the course. As a bonus, each participant will also receive a free shinai (bamboo sword) to keep.
To inquire about the next beginners' course, interested individuals can complete the online form provided.
Upon completion of the beginners' course, participants are welcome to join Nenriki Kendo Club and participate in regular practises on Tuesdays and Fridays. During the course, Kendo armour will be provided, and new members can continue to borrow club armour subject to availability until they are ready to purchase their own.
For individuals interested in becoming members of Nenriki Kendo Club, the club operates on a membership basis with an annual fee. The membership fee amounts to 25 per month, payable by standing order. Nenriki does not maintain a separate Juniors section; however, accompanied Juniors aged 15 and above who are capable of joining practise with adults are accepted. As part of the club's child protection policy, individuals aged 18 or under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The membership application form can be conveniently completed online.
Nenriki membership grants access to training and the use of club equipment at the Dojo, as well as registration as a Nenriki member with the British Kendo Association. It is important to note that membership of the British Kendo Association must be arranged separately, at a cost of approximately 45 per year or 30 for students and concessions. This membership provides insurance coverage and permits entry to various Kendo events, including training camps, gradings, and competitions.
For more detailed information regarding club membership, interested individuals can visit the club's website.
Whether you are a beginner looking to embark on your Kendo journey or an experienced practitioner seeking to join a reputable club, Nenriki Kendo Club welcomes you with open arms.
