Narrow Neck trail is an exhilarating cycling and walking adventure located atop the isolated Narrow Neck peninsula within Blue Mountains National Park. Situated near the town of Katoomba in the Southern Blue Mountains area of Sydney and surrounds, this trail offers incredible views, birdwatching opportunities, and showcases the beauty of wildflowers.
The trail spans a distance of 19 kilometres, making it a good half-day activity. With a medium grade difficulty, it is accessible for most experienced cyclists and hikers. Visitors are advised to bring drinking water, a hat, sunscreen, helmet, bike repair kit, personal locator beacon, snacks, and suitable clothing. It is important to note that walkers and bike riders share the trail, and cyclists should give way to pedestrians.
To access the trail, cyclists can ride approximately 5 kilometres from Katoomba train station to the locked gate on Narrow Neck Road. This section is recommended for 4WD vehicles and requires navigating the unsealed Glenraphael Drive and Narrow Neck Plateau trail. Visitors may find it helpful to fill in a free trip intention form and hire a personal locator beacon before embarking on the adventure.
Beginning from the locked gate along Narrow Neck Road, the trail traverses the high plateau, offering stunning views and diverse landscapes. As cyclists make their way through open forest, heath, and swamplands, they will encounter breathtaking scenery, abundant wildflowers, and countless photo opportunities. At the trail's narrowest point, the cliffs dramatically drop on either side, providing panoramic vistas of the Jamison Valley and Megalong Valley.
At the end of the trail, visitors will be rewarded with sweeping views of the Wild Dog Mountains, Kanangra Wilderness, and a portion of Lake Burragorang. Bird enthusiasts will find Narrow Neck to be a paradise for birdwatching, as the shrub and heathlands support a wide variety of nectar-producing plants. This habitat attracts birds such as the eastern spinebill, New Holland honeyeater, and migrating yellow-faced honeyeaters. If lucky, visitors may also spot wedge-tailed eagles engaging in their mesmerising courtship dance high above the valley.
For those seeking a longer hiking adventure, Narrow Neck can be incorporated as part of the 45-kilometre Katoomba to Kanangra hike. This multi-day trek showcases the natural beauty and cultural significance of the Greater Blue Mountains Area World Heritage Property.
It is important to plan and prepare for the trail, especially in remote and extreme weather conditions. Visitors are urged to stay safe by informing someone of their plans and being mindful of the environment.
