Established in 1888, the Nanaimo Hornets Rugby Club has been a staple in the Vancouver Island rugby community for over a century. Originally known as the Nanaimo Rovers, the club changed its name later in the century and has since become a prominent club in the region. The Hornets have made significant contributions to the sport, moving their home pitch to various venues before ultimately building their own Hornets' Nest at May Bennett Park. This 3500 square foot log building houses a main hall, licensed bar, kitchen, change rooms, and more, overlooking the international size rugby pitch that was developed by club members.
