Cases, even facing closure? Yet here we are in 2021, still going strong and proud to be the oldest bowling club in the Midlothian District.
The Musselburgh Bowling Club, located in the historic town of Musselburgh, dates back to 1855 and has a rich history intertwined with the town's own. Musselburgh itself is an ancient town on the shores of the River Forth, just 5 miles east of Edinburgh. With its history dating back to Roman times, the town has seen its fair share of industries come and go, but it has always maintained its strong sense of community and pride.
The town's name is derived from the mussel beds that were once abundant in the area, providing sustenance for the earliest inhabitants of the town. Unfortunately, these mussel beds are no longer viable for commercial use, but they remain an important part of the town's heritage. Musselburgh is also known as the "Honest Toun” due to an incident in 1332 when the townspeople took care of the Earl of Moray during his illness and refused payment for their services. This act of loyalty earned them the reputation of being “honest men” and became the town's motto - “Honesty”.
The Musselburgh Bowling Club proudly displays the town's motto on its badge, alongside mussels and anchors representing the town's historical industries. Throughout its long history, the club has produced notable members who have made significant contributions to the sport of bowling. Two of its members even served as Presidents of the Scottish Bowling Association, while others have held positions in the Midlothian Bowling Association. These achievements reflect the dedication and talent of the club's members.
