Murchison Bowls Club

The Murchison Bowls Club, located in Greater Shepparton City, is a thriving sports club that offers its members the opportunity to participate in the beloved Australian pastime of lawn bowls. With a picturesque location near the Barwon River in southwest Geelong, the club has been a popular choice for locals for many years. The club is supported by approximately 500 members, including around 350 bowlers and 150 social members, who enjoy the well-maintained greens and vibrant social atmosphere.

The club's history dates back to September 13, 1958, when the Highton Progress Association decided to establish a bowling club in the area. Three years later, on September 30, 1961, the Highton Bowls Club had its official opening, with the first clubhouse opening the following year. In September 1991, the current clubhouse was unveiled, providing a welcoming space for members to socialise and relax.

The Murchison Bowls Club offers a range of activities to cater to the diverse interests of its members. In addition to regular men's, ladies', and mixed social matches on the greens, the club also organises other social events at the clubhouse and bar. The Friday Night Bistro is a popular gathering, offering delicious meals and a chance to connect with fellow members. The club also hosts special events like Crackerjack and Barefoot Bowls, aimed at attracting a younger demographic and introducing them to the sport in a fun and relaxed environment.

Members of the Murchison Bowls Club can also participate in various competitions throughout the year. Club Championship events are a highlight, allowing members to showcase their skills and compete against their peers. The club also fields teams in the Geelong Bowls Region competition, both in the Midweek (Tuesday) and Weekend (Saturday) Pennants. Last year, the club achieved great success, with all seven Pennant teams qualifying for the finals and the Division 1 Pennant team taking home the topship.

Facilities at the Murchison Bowls Club are top-notch, ensuring that members have access to excellent amenities. The club boasts three outdoor greens, including two grass greens and one synthetic green known as the 'Founder's Green. ' The synthetic green, conveniently located in front of the clubhouse, features lighting to allow for play day and night, regardless of the season. The clubhouse itself is spacious and can accommodate more than 160 members, players, and guests.

The commercial-grade kitchen is available for members to use or can be utilised by the club's in-house caterer for club event meals. Additionally, there is a four-rink carpeted green beneath the clubhouse that is used for coaching and practise throughout the year, even offering heated matches during the winter months.
