Mumeishi Kendo Club, situated in Hounslow, West London, is a long-standing martial arts club with a rich heritage in offering training to people of all ages and genders. With a legacy spanning over 50 years, the club is well respected within the kendo community.
The club was established in the 1960s, a time when kendo was in its nascent stage in the UK. Initially, it operated from Hayes Sports Centre in Middlesex. Under the guidance of the late Okimitsu Fujii Sensei, the club gradually grew in membership and skill.
Seeking a name that embodied their values, the members chose "Mumeishi," meaning "no name" in Japanese, to signify their commitment to open-mindedness and camaraderie within the kendo community.
Throughout its journey, Mumeishi Kendo Club has benefited from the support of many individuals. In 1971, Terry Holt, then a British Team member, became the club's kendo instructor. His expertise significantly contributed to the club’s development. Additionally, Watanabe-san from Japan played a crucial role in helping and befriending club members during the early years.
As the club's popularity increased, the need for additional training sessions became apparent. Consequently, the club added a second training night, eventually switching to Sunday mornings to accommodate members with late work schedules. Mumeishi Kendo Club later relocated to Cranford Community College in Hounslow, a facility that offered an ideal setting with a well-equipped dojo, quality flooring, and changing rooms.
Training sessions are held every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday, providing accessible options for residents of Southall, Hounslow, Greenford, Hanwell, Acton, Ealing, West Ealing, and Gunnersbury. The club's venues are easily reachable and offer a supportive environment for both beginners and experienced practitioners.
Prospective beginners can find detailed information about the club's courses on their website, which includes frequently asked questions and practise times. The club’s dedication to excellence and inclusivity is evident in its efforts to offer training opportunities to all.
Mumeishi Kendo Club prides itself on its strong community spirit and commitment to promoting kendo. Members can expect to enhance their physical skills while developing discipline, focus, and an appreciation of kendo's traditions and values.
