Goju Ryu History: Goju Ryu is a style of Karate that was founded by Miyagi Chojun Sensei in Okinawa, Japan. It is a close quarter fighting system that emphasises both hard (Go) and soft (Ju) techniques. The style focuses on efficient and effective movements, as well as developing inner strength and harmony. Miyagi Chojun Sensei developed Goju Ryu by combining his knowledge of Chinese martial arts with the indigenous martial arts of Okinawa.
Kobudo: In addition to Goju Ryu Karate, Miyagi Do Karate also teaches Kobudo, the traditional weapons training of Okinawa. Students learn to use weapons such as the bo staff, sai, nunchaku, and tonfa. Kobudo provides a deeper understanding of martial arts principles and enhances physical coordination and focus.
Goju Ryu Kata: Kata are prearranged sequences of movements that serve as a training tool in Karate. Miyagi Do Karate places great importance on the practise and understanding of Goju Ryu Kata. Through kata, practitioners develop proper form, timing, and rhythm, as well as cultivate mental focus and discipline.
Dojo Etiquette: Miyagi Do Karate emphasises the importance of proper dojo etiquette. Students are expected to bow upon entering and leaving the dojo as a sign of respect. They must also show respect towards their instructors and fellow students. Additionally, cleanliness and maintaining a positive attitude are encouraged within the dojo.
Lineage: Miyagi Do Karate can trace its lineage back to the founder of Goju Ryu, Miyagi Chojun Sensei. Alessandro Trimboli Sensei, the founder of Miyagi Do Karate, received his training and certification from notable Goju Ryu masters such as George Barounis, Gonnohyoue Yamamoto, and Hisatada Yabe.
Instructors and Students: Miyagi Do Karate is led by Alessandro Trimboli Sensei, who has dedicated his life to preserving the traditional training methods of Goju Ryu. Trimboli Sensei is supported by a team of experienced instructors who share his passion for the martial arts. The school welcomes students of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to experienced practitioners.
Venues: Miyagi Do Karate has multiple training locations in the Hunters Hill and Lane Cove area. The North Strathfield Karate School, Hunters Lane Cove Karate School, and Crows Nest Karate School (Baptist Centre) are where students can attend classes and practise their techniques.
Kumite: Kumite, or sparring, is an essential aspect of Karate training. Miyagi Do Karate incorporates controlled partner drills and sparring sessions to develop practical fighting skills and improve reaction time. Safety and respect are emphasised during kumite training.
Calendar Archives: Miyagi Do Karate keeps records of past events and graduations in their calendar archives. This allows students and parents to reflect on their progress and achievements throughout their training journey.
At Miyagi Do Karate, the philosophy is centred around the quote by Funakoshi Gichin, the founder of Shotokan Karate, “There is no first strike in Karate. ” This emphasises the importance of self-control and using Karate as a means of self-defence rather than aggression.
Miyagi Do Karate is not just a place to learn Karate but also a community that supports and encourages personal growth. The school welcomes all individuals with a willingness to learn and strives to create an environment where students can reach their true potential, both in Karate and their personal lives.
