Mini Football, organised by the Western Springs Association Football Club, is a fantastic local event perfect for children aged 9 and 10 years old. The primary focus of this activity is to foster the development of their soccer skills as part of a team, all while ensuring a safe and friendly environment for everyone involved.
Participants will have the opportunity to play 7v7 matches, and they can choose between the Social or Academy pathway. The Social pathway allows players to compete at a level that suits their current abilities. It requires a commitment of one training session per week, in addition to a game. Female players are welcome to either join mixed teams or girls-only teams.
To get involved, registrations typically open from early February to April. The grade coordinator responsible for team assignments will take into consideration the requests indicated during registration. As an added bonus, each team will receive a kit bag at the beginning of the season, including size 4 balls, cones, and bibs. If necessary, teams can also secure turf space for training sessions.
Mini Football matches for the 9th and 10th grades will take place on Sundays at the well-known Seddon Fields, located on Meola Road. The season runs from 5th May 2024 to 22nd September 2024. It's good to note that there will be no games scheduled on 2nd June, 14th July, and 21st July, so players can plan accordingly.
For the 9th and 10th grades, Brad Alcorn and Claire Turner assume the role of coordinators respectively. Each team will require a volunteer coach, assistant coach, and manager, so parents and guardians are encouraged to step up and make a difference. Coaches are also encouraged to complete a Junior Coaching Course, held at the Western Springs Clubrooms, at no expense.
To keep everyone up to date, the weekly draw will be available at least 3–4 days in advance on our website and app. Keep in mind that teams can have a maximum of 10 players, and the games will be played on either a training pitch or a quarter of a full-sized pitch, complete with 4m × 2m goals.
Overall, the aim of Mini Football is to educate our young players, help them understand the simple rules of the game, and provide them with the opportunity to truly enjoy the sport.
