Originally known as the Cumbrae Golf Club, it was formed in 1888 by gentlemen members of the Glasgow Golf Club who wanted to play golf while holidaying in Millport. The course was initially a 9-hole layout, opened on April 2nd, and situated on land rented from Mr. Baillie of Damhead farm.
Over the years, the club has seen numerous renovations and improvements, with contributions from well-known golf course designers James Braid and George Duncan. The club's name was changed to Millport Golf Club in 1900, and a new clubhouse was built in 1909.
