Meritor Riding Stables

Meritor Riding Stables is a horse-riding service located in Peacehaven, East Sussex, near Brighton. It offers horse sharing opportunities for horse lovers who are interested in both the caring and riding aspects of horse or pony life.

The stables are situated next to the owner's home, which becomes a warm and inviting place for sharers and helpers on weekends. The routine at Meritor Riding Stables begins at 8:30-9AM on both Saturdays and Sundays, with a delicious brunch served by approximately 11AM. The facility boasts a fantastic sand arena, providing a safe and sound training environment for the animals.

To participate in horse sharing, individuals must commit to helping on Saturdays and/or Sundays throughout the year, rain or shine. However, it's important to note that places are limited. It's advisable to begin the process of becoming a sharer in December or January, as the demand tends to fill up quickly by springtime.

Owning a horse can be quite costly, with monthly expenses totalling 400-500 per horse. This includes stable keep (200-300 per month per horse), vet bills (40 per month per horse), shoeing (40 per month per horse), insurance (30 per month per horse), feed, and general care (110 per month per horse). In contrast, horse sharers contribute 100 per month (minimum 6-month commitment) plus one day of help per week. All the monies collected go back to the horses' care, as the owners subsidise the yard themselves.

Most of the horses at Meritor Riding Stables have been rescued over the years, reflecting the owners' love and dedication to these animals.

To ensure sharers receive proper training, Ben, a professional and experienced trainer, is available on-site at an additional cost. However, Meritor Riding Stables is not a riding school. It primarily welcomes helpers interested in familiarising themselves with the care of large animals. Also, experienced riders who enjoy both the care and riding aspects are welcomed to become sharers.

Potential sharers must be honest about their own abilities and experience. Those who are still building confidence around large animals are encouraged to start as helpers.
