The school's origins trace back to 1965 when it was formed under the direct authorisation of Aikido founder Ueshiba Morihei, also known as O-Sensei. Sugano Seiichi, a direct student of O-Sensei, played a pivotal role as the head of Aiki-Kai in Australia and the Australian representative to the World Aikido Headquarters (Hombu) in Japan. Today, the Sugano Foundation continues to carry out his responsibilities after his passing in 2010.
