Meadowbank Pony Club is a friendly and welcoming inner-city pony club located in Meadowbank, Auckland. Since its establishment in 1968, the club has been operating on approximately 30 acres of land leased from Transit NZ and the Auckland City Council. With the ability to graze 25–30 horses per year, Meadowbank Pony Club currently has around 40 member families.
This non-profit working city farm is run entirely by dedicated parents and children who voluntarily contribute their time and efforts. While the club does not offer riding lessons or casual riding opportunities, they welcome inquiries from potential new members. It is worth noting that all members of Meadowbank Pony Club own or lease their own horses.
For younger riders who wish to be involved, the club offers an Equine Skills Programme and the option of attending a Pony Party during the summer months. Meadowbank Pony Club ensures that even under Covid-19 alert level restrictions, they continue to take care of their animals by providing them with food, water, and meeting all their responsibilities under the Animal Welfare Act and relevant codes of welfare. The club has implemented strict hygiene measures, such as using hand sanitisers, washing hands before and after entering the grounds, and utilising a tracing app for every visit.
While primarily focused on equestrian activities for those under 25, Meadowbank Pony Club also provides a comprehensive development programme that fosters leadership, mentoring, organisation, and safety skills. Many members of the club actively participate in other sports and community clubs, representing their schools in equestrian teams and undertaking various development endeavours, including the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Additionally, the club supports community needs programmes such as the SPCA and local schools. Members, families, and friends also show their support for local businesses, including the club's sponsors.
For riders without horses but with a passion for horses, Meadowbank Pony Club offers a Junior Equine Skills Certificate programme. Limited spaces are available, and interested individuals can join the waitlist. This programme provides weekly lessons on horse care and management, taught by qualified instructors. Participants have the opportunity to earn the new NZ Pony Club Junior Equine Skills Certificate.
With approximately 30 acres of land available, Meadowbank Pony Club offers year-round grazing and summer hacking for its members. Those interested in becoming a member can find more information and make inquiries on the club's website.
