Welcome to McGahan Lees Irish Dance Academy (McGL). The Academy, founded by Frances McGahan in 1996, has become a world-renowned Irish Dance Academy, taking dancers on a journey from complete beginners to the stages of London's West End. With over 25 years of experience, McGL boasts an impressive track record, producing 8 World Champions, 14 All Ireland Champions, and 30 Oireachtas/Major winners.
Classes are held in various locations across SE England and Europe, including Essex, Kent, North & SE London, Oxford, Prague, and Warsaw. McGL offers classes for all ages and levels, catering to absolute beginners as well as Open Championship World Medal holders. The experienced teachers at McGL have gone through the same journey as their students, enabling them to provide the best instruction and guidance based on their own experiences.
In line with the Academy's philosophy of treating all dancers equally, classes at McGL are tailored to the appropriate student level. The Academy firmly believes in nurturing potential and providing opportunities for dancers to develop. Financial support is extended to the dancers through the “Friends of McGahan Lees” program, and the Academy also donates thousands of pounds to charity every year.
Beyond being a Dance Academy, McGL is a tight-knit community that supports one another. By joining McGL, dancers not only have the opportunity to develop a love for Irish dance but also challenge themselves to excel. Whether they dance for the love of it or aim for excellence, McGL offers a memorable journey filled with experiences that will last a lifetime.
For beginners at McGL, classes are held in a fun and non-competitive environment where dancers are grouped based on similar ages. All they need is comfortable sports attire and plimsolls or pumps. Formal dance costumes and shoes are not necessary at this stage. Each dancer pays an annual registration fee, which includes a t-shirt, shoe bag, or other McGL branded attire. Taster classes are free, and the registration fee is only required when a dancer returns for their second month.
As dancers progress, they may choose to invest in a pair of Irish Dance pumps for soft shoe dancing, and second-hand shoes are always available. Beginners are encouraged to participate in the two annual class competitions, one in the summer and the other at Christmas. These competitions are a fun family affair, with everyone invited to attend and even participate. The emphasis is on having a good time while assessing the dancer's progress.
For those ready to take on the challenge of local competitions, McGL also offers competition classes. These classes provide the necessary training and support for dancers to showcase their skills and compete in the exciting world of Irish dance.
So, whether you're a beginner looking to discover the joy of Irish dance or an experienced dancer seeking to take your skills to the next level, McGahan Lees Irish Dance Academy is here to welcome you. Join our vibrant community and embark on a journey filled with passion, growth, and unforgettable memories.
