Welcome to McGahan Lees Irish Dance Academy (McGL)! The Academy, founded by Frances McGahan in 1996, is a renowned Contemporary Dance club based in Finchley, London. Registered with An Coimisiún le Rincí Gaelacha, one of the governing bodies of Irish dance based in Dublin, Ireland, McGL has over 25 years of experience in training dancers of all levels.
McGL is proud to have produced numerous talented dancers who have graced the stages of London's West End. Our impressive record includes 8 World Champions, 14 All Ireland Champions, and 30 Oireachtas/Major winners.
Dedicated to providing the best instruction, McGL offers classes for dancers of all ages, starting from absolute beginners as young as 4 years old. Our experienced teachers, who have gone through the same dance journey, understand the needs of our students and are committed to helping them develop their skills and passion for Irish dance.
At McGL, we believe in supporting our dancers and giving back to the community. We have established a program called 'Friends of McGahan Lees' that provides financial assistance to talented individuals. Additionally, we donate thousands of pounds to charities every year, showing our commitment to making a positive impact beyond the dance floor.
Joining the McGL family means becoming part of a supportive community. We are more than just a Dance Academy; we are a group of individuals who encourage and uplift each other. Through our performances and international travel opportunities, we create lifelong memories and foster personal growth and development.
If you're interested in starting your Irish dance journey, McGL welcomes beginners with open arms. Our beginner's classes create a fun and non-competitive environment for dancers to learn and grow. These classes are grouped by age and last for about an hour. No formal costumes or shoes are needed at this stage – dancers simply need to wear comfortable sports attire, such as a t-shirt, shorts or leggings, and plimsolls or pumps. We do ask that dancers tie back their hair for safety. The only additional cost is the annual registration fee, which includes a t-shirt or other McGL branded attire.
As dancers progress in their journey, they may choose to invest in a pair of Irish Dance pumps for soft shoe dancing. Heavy shoes are only required as dancers reach higher levels, and we always have second-hand ones available. For beginners, we encourage participation in our two annual class competitions, held in summer and at Christmas. These competitions are not only fun for the whole family but also provide a platform for personal enjoyment and growth.
