Mavlow School of Dance is excited to announce a local Contemporary Dance event that is sure to impress all dance enthusiasts in Wirral. Founded by the talented and renowned Miss Mavis, the club has a rich history and a passion for nurturing young dancers.
Miss Mavis, or Mavis Lowe as some may know her, began her dancing journey at the young age of 3. She was lucky enough to be taught by her sisters, Marjorie and Irene Ellick, who had already established the esteemed Excelsior School of Dancing. Later on, Miss Mavis attended the Hammond School in Chester, where she honed her skills and obtained teaching qualifications in both RAD Ballet and ISTD Modern Tap.
During her time at Hammond, Miss Mavis had an incredible opportunity to showcase her talents to none other than Margot Fonteyn herself. Fonteyn played a significant role in creating the RAD Syllabus, and witnessing Miss Mavis demonstrate the work was undoubtedly a memorable experience.
Miss Mavis's dancing journey also led her to perform in a pantomime at the Royal Court alongside Tommy Steele and the Steelmen. As if that wasn't impressive enough, she played a vital role in teaching Steele how to dance.
After her time at Hammond, Miss Mavis decided to focus on teaching and joined her sisters at the Excelsior School. However, her passion led her to open her very own school, Mavlow School of Dance, in Ashton in Makerfield back in 1965. Even after the move, one dedicated student named Donna continued to commute all the way from Ashton just to take classes with Miss Mavis until she went off to University.
With each passing year, Miss Mavis gradually reduced her teaching days, allowing her daughter Paula to take the reins alongside her granddaughter Anita. This mother-daughter-granddaughter team ensured the smooth running of the school and carried on Miss Mavis's legacy. After an astounding 40 years of establishing the school in West Kirby, Miss Mavis retired from teaching in July 2018, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of inspiration and growth.
Today, Mavlow School of Dance proudly continues to inspire and nurture young dancers in the West Kirby community. We invite all dance enthusiasts to join us at our local Contemporary Dance event and witness the incredible talent that our club has to offer. Get ready to be captivated by the passion, grace, and creativity that contemporary dance brings to the stage. We can't wait to see you there!
