The Manchester School of Arms HEMA Club specialises in teaching historical sword arts and fencing techniques. Their main focus of study is the German tradition of unarmored longsword fencing, using a well-developed syllabus where students track their progress in a workbook. The club also offers instruction in Italian longsword, quarterstaff, British military sabre, wrestling, and dagger fencing.
Safety is a priority at the Manchester School of Arms. During drills, students use blunted steel swords and padded safety swords for beginners. Light contact sparring is an integral part of every lesson, with advanced students having access to sparring with blunted steel or synthetic swords. Intense sparring and tournament attendance are supported, and the club will assist in referring members to suitable groups and setting up sparring meets for those interested.
The training culture and ethos of the Manchester School of Arms is centred around creating a safe and inclusive environment. They prioritise diversity, fun, and being safe while getting fencing-fit. The club supports and proudly allies with the Esfinges, the Women's HEMA network, and the LGBT+ community, respecting preferred pronouns and providing a safe and accessible space for anyone wanting to be involved in the historical sword arts community.
The instructors at the Manchester School of Arms treat their students with respect and patience, believing in the dignity and autonomy of each individual. Their aim is for students to leave each class happier and healthier than before. All activities are opt-in, allowing students to choose their level of participation. If a student is uncomfortable with an exercise or activity, the coaches will provide a suitable alternative without shaming or pressuring anyone.
Students are encouraged to ask questions and provide feedback to help their training partners improve, but only the coaches offer formal instruction.
The club operates as a not-for-profit venture, ensuring fair pricing to make the sport accessible to all. Any proceeds are reinvested into the club to acquire and maintain weapon simulators and safety equipment, as well as organising unique training events and hosting guest instructors. They offer a variety of training packages, such as a free taster session to join their regular classes and experience the club's welcoming community. Standard single sessions are priced at 10, while the Scholar Saver option offers a discount for advance booking at 7.
50. Additionally, the club offers a concession rate of 5 for those with low income, making sure that everyone has the opportunity to engage in the sport.
To make class scheduling and administration easier, the Manchester School of Arms uses SQUARESPACE. They recommend registering for an account on their website to have full access to class schedules, booking options, and the ability to manage your data and bookings.
