The club's history is rooted in its foundation in 1989 by Trevor Voyce as a Sunday team, known then as Alpha Sports Football Club. The club underwent a rebrand in 1996 and became Grove FC, experiencing immediate success under new manager Danny Fletcher in the Manchester Publicity Sunday League Division 2. In 1998, Dave Lavelle and Graham Kenny took over the club, leading it through a transition period. In 2000, the club adopted the name Manchester Rovers FC and joined the Manchester Amateur Sunday Football League.

Throughout its history, Manchester Rovers has had its fair share of accomplishments. The club reached the final of the Paul Myers Cup in 2003/04 and has been recognised for its commitment to fair play with awards such as the MASFL Most Sporting Team and the MPSL Division 1 Secretary of the Year. The club's success continued in 2005/06 when they were crowned champions of the MPSL Division 2. In 2007, they added another achievement to their list by winning the Manchester Publicity Sunday League Challenge Cup.
