Sensei and one to the class. This fosters respect and discipline within the dojo.
Manchester JKF WADOKAI offers authentic Japanese Wadoryu Karatedo classes twice-weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The classes are held in Didsbury, South Manchester, providing convenient access for students in the area. The training sessions are designed to enhance fitness, improve health, and develop self-defence skills.
JKF Wadokai is the largest single karate organisation in Japan, with its roots tracing back to 1934. The organisation was founded by Hironori Otsuka, a skilled karate practitioner who trained in old-style judo, kendo, and jujutsu before dedicating himself to karate practise. Otsuka trained under esteemed masters such as Funakoshi Gichin, Mabuni Kenwa, and Motobu Choki and established himself as an independent instructor teaching at various university clubs in Tokyo.
Wadokai technique embodies a fusion of the original Okinawan karate taught in Tokyo during the 1920s and old-style judo, jujutsu, and kendo. While the techniques are predominantly from karate, the method of movement, principles, and tactics heavily incorporate Otsuka's training in kobudo. Instead of relying solely on heavy body conditioning and strength, Wadokai emphasises speed, timing, and body movement to counter the opponent's attacks.
The core of Wadokai karate-do comprises ten kihon (basic techniques), nine kata (solo practise forms), and ten kihon kumite (basic pair forms). However, additional techniques and training methods may be introduced based on the preferences of individual teachers and dojo.
JKF Wadokai stands out in the international karate world as a democratic organisation run for its membership. It has an executive board and technical board composed of senior practising Karate-ka. The technical committee sets standards, reviews practise, leads seminars, and oversees the Dan grading system. To maintain high standards, Dan grades awarded by JKF Wadokai undergo a peer assessment by a panel of senior karate-ka, ensuring credibility and excellence.
JKF Wadokai has its headquarters office in central Tokyo and grants branch status to dojos worldwide, provided they have or are sponsored by a recognised JKF Wadokai Dan grade. Members enjoy the opportunity to participate in national and international competitions and seminars, fostering a friendly international community.
Participating in karate practise at Manchester JKF WADOKAI is a physically and mentally challenging endeavour that yields tremendous rewards. Progressing to the coveted 'black belt' level requires dedication, regular sustained practise, and a minimum of twice-weekly training. Through this practise, students can develop confidence, discipline, and self-control, while improving physical fitness and self-defence skills.
