Malahang Reserve Bike Hut, located in Heidelberg West, is a vibrant and inclusive bicycle club that has been a beloved part of the community since 1971. With a mission to tackle social isolation and provide a place to belong for people of all ages, the club offers a range of programmes, activities, long-term support, and friendship.
The club serves as a hub for individuals from all walks of life, embracing diversity and welcoming everyone. Whether you're a local or from afar, a seasoned cyclist or a beginner, the Malahang Reserve Bike Hut will make you feel right at home.
The youth programmes offered by the club are designed to help children and teenagers develop into well-adjusted, kind, and happy adults. These programmes provide a productive and fulfilling outlet for their seemingly endless energy, giving them the opportunity to engage in various activities.
Additionally, the club offers an extensive selection of adult programmes, recognising that it's never too late to pick up a new hobby, learn new skills, and make new friends. These programmes cater to adults of all ages, ensuring that everyone has a chance to grow and thrive within a supportive community.
The journey of the Malahang Reserve Bike Hut started with one child, whose angry words expressed the need for a place to belong. This prompted the founder, George Farrington, to form a team dedicated to helping troubled and disadvantaged youth who felt like they didn't fit in. Over five decades, the team, now known as Open House Christian Involvement Centres, has evolved into an institution devoted to caring for and supporting people of all ages.
Throughout the years, the club has made a significant impact on the community, providing support and care. Their work is reflected in the numbers, with 52 years of service, 15,841 social enterprise sales in 2023, and 3,864 occasions of service during the same year.
Real-life stories of individuals like Nicholas showcase the transformative power of the club's programmes. Nicholas, a shy and insecure teenager, found his self-confidence grow through the Youth Workshop Mentoring Programme. His passion for woodwork developed, and he aspired to become a carpenter.
Joining the Malahang Reserve Bike Hut means becoming part of a warm and welcoming family. Whether you're looking to extend a helping hand, seek support, enjoy a new hobby, or simply find a safe and supportive environment, the club will provide it. They are always eager to welcome new members and foster a sense of belonging.
