About

Lyttelton Rock, found in the beautiful Port Hills of Lyttelton, offers an awesome spot for rock climbers. With an altitude of 380m, it presents steep and sustained climbs for every skill level.

Despite being steep, Lyttelton Rock is known for its many holds, making it less technical but still physically demanding. Climbers need to rely on their strength and determination to place protection. Most routes are well-trodden and safe, though occasional crumbling footholds can occur. The cliff's cool, sheltered aspect provides a break on hot days, and some sections are so overhanging that light showers won't even be noticed.

After rain, seepage can be an issue, but the Ataturk wall remains sheltered and gets the afternoon sun, making it great for after-work climbs.

Many routes come with bolts and hangers, and most have belay/rappel anchors at the top. However, some like Pumping Velvet and Salome Malone, do not. Climbers usually scramble down the side, avoiding the private land over the fenceline at the top, with abseiling being a preferred descent method.

Even bolted routes might need extra gear between the bolts due to spacing, so come prepared with your gear and an adventurous spirit.

Historically, Lyttelton Rock has seen significant contributions since the 1970s with climbers like Stu Allen and Ross Gooder putting this crag on the map. The 1980s and 1990s saw further development by climbers like John Visser, Lindsay Main, Joe Arts, Tonne Snelder, Roger Parkyn, and Tony Burnell, adding many challenging routes.

Getting to Lyttelton Rock is easy, with a short 5-minute walk from the Summit Road, where the Major Hornbrook Track crosses. It’s to the south, offering great climbing conditions. For precise location details, refer to the TOPO50 BX24 777 739 map.

Lyttelton Rock is perfect for both experienced climbers and novices looking for a challenge. With its rich history and varied routes, this crag is a must-visit for rock climbing enthusiasts in the area.
