Born in the Poole area of Bournemouth and Poole's longest-established school of Ip Man Wing Chun and Street Self Defence, Lun Kuen Academy of Wing Chun is led by Sifu Stephen Lyons, an internationally certified Master and member of the SKWCMAA. With a belief that the teacher and the student are the same, the academy emphasises continuous learning and personal growth.
The academy follows the principles of Wing Chun, a martial art with a rich history dating back approximately 350–500 years. According to legend, a Buddhist nun named Ng Mui observed a fight between a crane and a snake, adapting their movements to create a style suitable for humans. When she met Yim Wing Chun, a young woman pursued by a warlord, Ng Mui agreed to teach her the newly developed style. After Yim Wing Chun successfully defended herself against the warlord, she passed on her skills to her husband Leung Bok Chau, who named the system "Wing Chun” in honour of his wife.
The style was further developed and eventually brought to Hong Kong by the legendary Yip Man in 1918, who later became the instructor of Bruce Lee.
