About

Llanrwst Anglers Club, located on the prime lower section of the River Conwy, offers affordable fishing options for both local and visiting anglers. With a rich angling history dating back to its formation in 1933, the club holds a special place in the hearts of fishing enthusiasts. It was from the club's waters that Mr Hughes caught the record-breaking salmon for the River Conwy in 1954, weighing over 40lbs.

The River Conwy is renowned for its large sea trout, and although fish nearing the record size haven't been caught in recent years, anglers can still expect to catch salmon weighing up to 20lbs and sea trout over the magical 10lbs mark. The best fishing spots are located just above the upstream tidal limit, allowing sea trout to push into the club's waters during most tides. Nighttime sea trout fishing can be exceptional under favourable conditions, particularly during July and August. In recent years, good numbers of fresh fish have been caught well into September.

When it rains in the mountains of Snowdonia, the Conwy river rises, bringing with it an influx of salmon. Most rainfall events, known as spates, see fish running, and May marks the beginning of an increasing number of fish caught throughout the Conwy river. The best salmon fishing occurs from July onwards, with an increasing presence of fish until the fishing season's end in October. While salmon can be caught using spinners and bait, fly-fishing enthusiasts will find the town waters to be a real treat.

In addition to salmon and sea trout, Llanrwst Anglers Club also offers fishing opportunities for wild brown trout at Llyn Bodgynydd. While the River Conwy is not primarily known as a brown trout river, there is still a reasonable number of brown trout present, some growing to well over 2lbs.

Affordable membership options are available, and day and weekly tickets can be purchased for those looking to enjoy a short fishing trip. Along the river bank, anglers will also be delighted by the abundance of wildlife, including regular sightings of kingfishers, dippers, grey wagtails, peregrine falcons, buzzards, and if lucky, nightjars at dusk.

For visiting anglers, Llanrwst and the surrounding towns and villages offer plenty of accommodation options. Situated on the doorstep of Snowdonia National Park, there are numerous attractions and activities for families to explore while anglers enjoy a few hours on the river.

1. River Conwy Town Waters: This section is considered the jewel of the club's waters, offering double bank fishing from Gowers bridge (bottom of beat) for approximately 2 miles upstream. The area boasts excellent holding pools suitable for both salmon fishing and night fishing for sea trout. It features beautiful runs, glides, and pool tails, perfect for fly-fishing with a double-handed rod when the river measures greater than 1.

0m on the Cwm Llanerch gauge. Deeper pools are better for spinning and bait fishing and can hold a good number of salmon and sea trout throughout the year. With ample parking and access to the water, anglers and their families can also enjoy the attractions in Llanrwst, Trefriw, and Betws y Coed.

2. Glanaber: This fishing area provides approximately 500 yards of double bank fishing near the village of Trefriw. Due to steep banks, spinner and bait fishing are better suited for this location. As the river is tidal here, it can be productive during low water conditions when both salmon and sea trout venture up on the tides.

3. Maenan: Anglers can enjoy approximately 500 yards of East bank only fishing in Maenan.
